chinese herbal medicine

Herbal medicine has been the primary form of medicine used around the world for thousands of years. Chinese herbal medicine is unique in its understanding of taste, thermal nature, and meridian or organ correspondence of each herb. The Chinese material medica contains over 300 medicinals, including roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, shells, minerals and animal parts.
Chinese medicinals have been used successfully for over 2500 years and classic formulas have been created to treat commonly observed organ patterns in the mind-body complex. They have stood the test of time and their use has been documented in the form of clinical case studies.

They are still being used widely and are continuing to treat modern-day health concerns. Formulas have been modified over time by various practitioners, resulting in us now having many different formulas to choose from in addressing specific health concerns. Your practitioner may modify a classic formula themselves, and will always consider the ingredients in a formula to make sure they are a good fit for you. They may also choose to make a custom formula using Chinese herbal ingredients.

herbal granules

I am currently stocking granules from Sun Ten, and tablets from Golden Flower.
Granules are made by the company brewing batches of traditional herbal formulas using raw herb materials. The herbs are brewed appropriately, and follow certain cooking directions for specific herbs. The tea is then sprayed onto a starch which is then dehydrated.

The herbs are monitored carefully for the presence of any heavy metals, sulphur, or other substances which can be found on some raw materials coming from different regions in China. Any herbs that are known to contain naturally occurring toxic chemicals are tested and monitored to ensure their safety.

You can read more about Sun Ten granules and their manufacturing process here , here, and here.

You can read more about the Golden Flower company and their products here.

I would love to start bringing in raw Chinese herbs that are grown in the US under natural and, when accessible, organic growing standards. The cost of these herbs is a bit higher, and the patient would need to boil and decoct the herbs themselves. Please let me know if these herbs are of interest to you and I will work towards bringing them in more and more.

Spring Winds, who works with various farmers across the US to distribute high-quality Chinese herbs grown in North America.

I would like to acknowledge how fortunate we are here in the West to receive this wisdom of Chinese herbal medicine. All parts of the world have their vast wisdom of plants and their medicinal uses, and unfortunately, through colonization, we have largely lost access to indigenous knowledge here in North America.

The popularity of herbs - both Western and Chinese, is contributing to an overall remembering of how plants have played an integral part in our health around the globe for thousands of years, and for this I am grateful.
